Markland Locks & Dam

The locks were started in March of 1956 and started operation in May of 1959. Dam construction started in April 1959 and was completed in June 1964.  There is an observation platform so you can watch as boats navigate through the lock.  Shaded picnic area with restrooms. It’s time well-spent.  50 million tons of cargo pass through Markland Locks each year.  The purpose of Markland Dam to help prevent flooding and insurance barge traffic to increase the economy of cities all along the Ohio River.  There’s a hydroelectric plant on the Indiana side of the river.
